View compareKing Cake custom is believed to have arrived in New Orleans from France in 1870. The bakery treat known as a "King Cake" is an oval-shaped hybrid of a coffee cake and a French pastry that is as delicious as it is steeped in history. It is embellished in regal hues of PURPLE, which stands for "Justice," GREEN, which represents "Faith," and GOLD, which stands for "Power." These hues were selected to evoke a glittering crown honouring the Magi who came to see the Christ Child on the Epiphany. In the past, each King Cake contained additional surprises like money, beans, pecans, or peas.
Today, the typical gift is a little plastic baby. The King Cake is cut into pieces and served at events. Each participant inspects their piece to determine if it includes the "baby." If so, they are declared the "King" for the day and are obliged by tradition to host the following celebration and supply the King Cake.
Why do people like King cake
Two theories exist. A few people think the plastic baby represents Baby Jesus because of the religious significance of King's Day. Others, however, cling to the popular New Orleans folklore, which claims that during the celebration of the king's ball in colonial Louisiana, an extravagant cake was served with a bean or ring hidden inside. The winner of the balls preceding the extravagant Mardi Gras climax would be the person who found the bean or trinket in his or her slice of cake.

How to bake King cake
Step 1
Scald milk over medium heat before making pastry. Once the heat is off, whisk in the butter. Ensure that the mixture cools to room temperature.
Step 2
Combine yeast in a sizable basin with 1 tablespoon of white sugar and warm water. Allow to stand for 10 minutes or until creamy.
Step 3:
Add the chilled milk mixture and eggs to the yeast mixture. Add the remaining salt, nutmeg, and white sugar. To the milk/egg mixture, beat in the flour, one cup at a time. When the dough is ready, place it on a surface that has been lightly dusted with flour and knead for 8 to 10 minutes, or until it is smooth and elastic.
Step 4
Toss the dough in a bowl that has been lightly greased. Cover with a moist towel or plastic wrap, then leave to rise for about two hours in a warm location until it has doubled in size. After rising, punch down the dough and split it in half.
Step 5:
Set the oven's temperature to 375°F (190 degrees C). 2 cookie sheets should be greased or lined with parchment paper.
Step 6
Make filling in : In a bowl, mix the cinnamon, raisins, flour, pecans, and brown sugar. Melted butter should be added and combined until crumbly.
Step 7
Create a 10x16-inch rectangle out of each piece of dough. Spread the filling equally over the dough before tightly rolling it up like a jelly roll, starting at the wide side. Each roll's ends should be brought together to create two oval-shaped rings.
Step 8
Each ring should be put on the prepared cookie sheet. Make cuts through the rings with scissors at 1-inch intervals, about halfway through. Allow to rise for 45 minutes or until it has doubled in size in a warm place.
Step 9
Bake in the preheated oven for about 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
Step 10:
Prepare the glaze by mixing water and confectioners' sugar in a bowl until it is smooth.
Step 11
Insert doll into the centre of a heated cake. Pour glaze over both of the warm cakes.
