Black forest cake is a traditional German dessert that is constructed with a light chocolate sponge cake that has been steeped in cherry brandy (Kirsch) and cherry syrup before being topped with whipped cream and cherries. To wonderful effect, this variation replaces the chocolate sponge with a denser, fudgier chocolate cake.
However, it can be challenging to cut a dense chocolate cake into four thin layers. Before slicing, let them cool completely to ease the task. You can prepare the cherry jam and syrup in advance.
Why do people like Black Forest Cake
A Black Forest Cake is a celebration cake in my eyes. What more screams "celebration" than chocolate cake, Morello cherries laced with Kirsch, and copious amounts of delicious whipped cream? The Black Forest region of Germany is where Black Forest Cake is from, as its name suggests. There are numerous origin hypotheses for this extremely well-liked cake, which first appeared in writing in 1934. Its history is well-told in Heston Blumenthal's book "In Search of Perfection." He explains that some people think the term "Schwarzwalder Kirsch Torte" refers to the dessert's distinctive Kirsch (cherry distillate) flavour.
Others claim that the chocolate shavings used to decorate the cake serve as a reminder of the dense trees that grow in the Black Forest (Kirsch is produced at more than 14,000 distilleries in the area). There are several tales surrounding the cake's history. It wasn't a cake, but it might have been derived from a regional dish that was created with cream, cherries, and Kirsch. Some claim that the cake's chocolate component originated in a different region of Germany (Bad Godesburg). Another legend claims that the cake was created by a Dutchman who settled in the area. Everyone will concur that this cake is both lovely to look at and delightful to eat, despite the possibility that we will never learn its original origin.

How to bake Black forest cake
Step 1
Oven temperature set at 350 degrees. Two 9-inch round cake pans should be oil-greased and should have parchment paper on the bottom.
Step 2
To make the cake, combine the cocoa powder and boiling water in a large basin and whisk until thoroughly combined. Whisk in the buttermilk and 1 cup of vegetable oil after adding them. Whisk in the eggs, brown sugar, and vanilla extract after adding them.
Step 3
Mix the flour, baking soda, salt, and baking powder in a medium bowl. Mix the dry ingredients with the liquid after adding them. Between the two pans, divide the batter equally.
Step 4
Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Once the cakes have cooled for about 20 minutes on a rack, flip them over and allow them to finish cooling. Once more, turn the cakes over, remove a small part of the dome from each cake to flatten the top. To make four layers, carefully cut each layer in half horizontally.
Step 5
While the cake cools, make the cherry jam by heating the cherries and sugar in a small saucepan over medium heat. Cook for about 6 minutes, stirring regularly and crush the cherries with a wooden spoon or potato masher to release their juice.
Step 6
The cooked cherries should be left aside while the cherry combination is run through a fine-mesh sieve. Reserve the syrup in a medium bowl. Take away 120 milliliters, or 1/2 cup, of the syrup. (If you have extra, keep it in the fridge for future use.) Stir the Kirsch into the remaining syrup after measuring out 1 tablespoon from the 1/2 cup; set aside to chill entirely.
Step 7
In the small dish, combine 1 teaspoon cornstarch with the 1 tablespoon cherry syrup that was set aside. Transfer it to the saucepan, whisk in the cooked cherries, and heat over medium-low heat for 3 to 5 minutes, or until the liquid has thickened. Place in a basin to totally cool. (You need approximately 114 cups/300 milliliters of jam.)
Step 8
To make the whipped cream, combine the confectioners' sugar, cornstarch, and 1 cup heavy cream in a small pot. Over medium heat, whisk the mixture until it thickens to the consistency of thin pudding, about 2 minutes. Adjust the heat as necessary to prevent burning. Place cream mixture in a large bowl to finish cooling.
Step 9
Build the cake by whisking the cream mixture to make it more fluid before adding the final 3 cups of heavy cream. Beat the mixture for about 2 minutes on medium speed with an electric mixer until you have medium-stiff peaks. Place one cake layer, cut-side up, on a serving platter. Brush it with some cherry-Kirsch syrup, then top it with 1 cup of whipped cream and 1/3 of the cherry jam. Spread the jam and cream equally by giving them a slight swirl. Repeat this procedure twice more, and then place the final cake layer on top, cut-side down. Next, spread a thin layer of whipped cream over the entire cake. 30 minutes should be spent cooling.
Step 10
With the remaining whipped cream, top off the cake. Use a vegetable peeler to create curled chocolate shavings after warming the chocolate bar in the microwave for 10 to 15 seconds. The cake's sides and a 1-inch border on top should be covered in chocolate shavings. Add the 8 cherries on top. For up to three days, keep leftovers in the refrigerator well-wrapped.
